The
rediscovery of shamanism has emerged as a major thrust of the current
spiritual reawakening sweeping the Western world. Traditional
shaman's time-tested techniques for accessing the realms of the
sacred are providing non-tribal Westerners with an extraordinarily
effective method for connecting with the inner sources of power and
wisdom that reside there. During this week-long retreat, to be held
right on the Island of Hawaii, we will rediscover our own indigenous
heart, reestablish connections with our spirit helpers, teachers,
ancestors, and possibly descendants, engage in visionary fieldwork
and examine the nature of health, illness, and healing from the
perspective of spirit medicine. The workshop will provide a powerful
introduction for those less familiar with the shaman's path and
enhance the practice of more experienced inner travelers. Unique
material on the soul cluster as well as the nature of reality from
the Hawaiian kahuna perspective will be presented. Shamanic
journeying will form the centerpiece of our work, and the program
will conclude with a powerful healing ritual.
NOTE: Bring drums and rattles if you have them, a notebook or sketchpad, a small set of oil or chalk pastels, a bandanna or eyeshade, as well as a small, personal offering for Pele.
Anthropologist
Hank Wesselman has worked for more that 30 years with an
international team of scientists investigating the mystery of human
origins in East Africa's Great Rift Valley. He has spent much of his
life with indigenous people, and in the 1970s, while doing fieldwork
in southern Ethiopia, he began to have spontaneous visionary
experiences strikingly like those of traditional shamans. His
experiences are documented in his autobiographical trilogy:
Spiritwalker: Messages from the Future ( Bantam, 1995),
Medicinemaker: Mystic Encounters on the Shaman's Path (Bantam, 1998),
and Visionseeker: Shared Wisdom from the Place of Refuge (Hay House,
2001).

For more information on travel to The Big Island, contact The Big Island Visitors Bureau
The Big Island is famous for Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on Earth and home to the Hawaiian Fire Goddess, Pele. In Vision Seeker 1 programs we pilgrimage to Volcanoes National Park. This "power spot" is filled with geological grandeur and is the source of many Hawaiian myths and legends.
An amazing but true fact is that The Big Island has over 2/3rds of the world's climates. We expect it to be warm and mostly sunny during the day time, so summer time clothing is recommended. Temps. will be in the low 80s during the daytime and mid 60s -70s at night. However, it can get windy and rainy at any time and it is advisable to bring a light jacket and a sweater or sweatshirt which you will also need in the evenings. A good pair of walking shoes (closed toes) is also recommended.(It is also customary to remove your shoes while indoors and socks are a nice alternative.) We will head to the beach on one day so you should bring your bathing suits, sunscreen and a hat.
We will be doing shamanic journeying. For this, please bring a rattle or a drum if you have one. If you prefer to use a bandanna or eye shade to block out any light, you should also bring that. If you prefer to lay on the floor while journeying, please bring a yoga mat or somthing similar and a small pillow. We also recommend bringing a journal to record your experiences.
Breakfast is served at the accommodations where you will be staying. Lunches and dinners will be served at the retreat facility where classes take place.
In case you need to be contacted during your stay, messages can be left at New Millennium Institute at (808) 885-2181. Once you arrive at your respective accommodations, you will be given a direct phone number. Please bring a phone calling card with you in the event that you need to make long distance calls during your stay.
If you are requesting a specific room mate, please detail your request. If you have requested single accommodations (and are paying a supplement for them) please detail your request.
